Move over Bozeman, Belgrade is becoming the new hot spot in Montana! By percentage of population growth, it is the fastest growing city in the state and is now the 8th largest city in Montana with a population of 13,500 in 2023. Belgrade, like Bozeman, has been experiencing steady growth over the past decade, which increased dramatically during the pandemic. Just before the pandemic, the City of Belgrade revised its growth policy, anticipating the changes that would come with the increase in population. Over the last 24 months, the city has annexed over 1,800 acres, which has doubled Belgrade's actual size. This highlights the importance of continued conversations about growth and how it should be managed. Here are some current and upcoming developments in Belgrade.
Located near Alaska Rd and Frank Rd this 250-acre development will be mixed-use. At final buildout, they expect 1,464 residential units and 47 commercial lots.
Meadowlark has been an established neighborhood in Belgrade for some time. The latest two phases are 73 acres and at full buildout will have 145 units and 47 mixed-used/commercial units.
This subdivision is also more established. It has 153 acres and will have an estimated 601 units at full buildout.
This new subdivision is located off Bollinger Rd. It features 140 acres and will have 693 units at full buildout
170-Acres located off of Weaver and Collins Rd. At full buildout, it is estimated to have 1,360 units and 1 commercial lot
Located near Jackrabbit and Cameron Bridge Rd. This is 195 acres and at buildout will have 1,196 units and 45 commercial lots.
This is the largest new development on the list. It is 600 acres off of Frontage Rd West. Of that, 142 acres will be commercial. As for residential, they estimate 4,686 units!
One of the biggest announcements in Belgrade is a potential 53,000 sq.ft. Amazon Distribution Center breaking ground in a few weeks in Jackrabbit Crossing. This is a 200-acre mixed-use development between Cameron Bridge and Frank Rd that Venture West is developing. Jackrabbit Crossing expects to have over 1,000 single-family homes and businesses at completion. The Amazon facility is waiting for approval by the Belgrade City Council and then it will move forward.
That isn’t the only business in the plans for the area. There are two grocery stores in future plans (one is rumored to be a Rosauers!), a freestanding Starbucks, a Maverick store, and an Empire Building Materials location. More retailers and restaurants are planning to find a home in Belgrade as these developments continue.
The city of Belgrade expects this growth to continue at a fast rate for the next 5-20 years. Projects are in the 10-20 year build out range. Once fully built out they anticipate the population of Belgrade to be 35,000, larger than both Butte and Helena! Looks like Belgrade will no longer be a bedroom community of Bozeman!
