Bozeman Creek is Getting a Major Restoration. Here's What the Plan Includes.

Bozeman Creek has been a part of this valley's history since the city was founded, and for much of that time it was treated more like a drainage problem than an asset. That's changing. In August 2024, the Bozeman City Commission formally adopted the Bozeman Creek Vision Plan as a Commission priority, setting the stage for a long-term effort to restore the creek, improve flood mitigation, and reconnect it to the neighborhoods and trails around it. 

What is the Bozeman Creek Vision Plan?

The Bozeman Creek Vision Plan is a City of Bozeman initiative focused on the urbanized sections of the creek, which runs through the heart of downtown and into surrounding neighborhoods. The plan is built on more than a decade of earlier work, including the 2012 Bozeman Creek Enhancement Plan, a 2020 Technical Assistance Grant Report, and the 2023 Gallatin Valley Sensitive Lands Protection Plan. 

Per the City of Bozeman’s project page, the vision is organized around six goals: improving flood mitigation, raising water quality, increasing access and connectivity to parks and trails, supporting economic development, strengthening community connection to the creek, and celebrating the creek’s natural heritage.

Why was Bozeman Creek neglected for so long?

The creek was central to Bozeman’s early development — but as the city grew, portions were channelized, straightened, and in some cases covered over entirely. Rather than being designed around it, urban infrastructure was built on top of it. Today, long stretches of Bozeman Creek run behind buildings or through constrained corridors with limited public access, and certain sections have chronic flooding problems as a result.

The Vision Plan is an acknowledgment that the approach needs to change — and that a restored, accessible creek running through downtown Bozeman is an asset, not an obstacle.

What changes are actually planned for the creek?

The ultimate vision is still being developed through a community engagement process, so specific construction timelines and project locations haven’t been finalized. Early ideas include better creek access points along its downtown corridor, expanded park and trail connectivity, and ecological improvements to support healthier water quality and wildlife habitat. Flood mitigation work is also a priority, particularly in areas where channelization has made the creek more prone to overflow.

What does this mean for neighborhoods near the creek?

Urban creek restoration projects in other cities have consistently shown that improving creek access and ecological health lifts the value of surrounding neighborhoods. Better trail connectivity, reduced flood risk, and increased green space tend to make nearby homes and businesses more attractive. In a place like Bozeman, where walkability and access to the outdoors already drive a lot of buyer interest, a restored creek running through Midtown and downtown is the kind of long-term infrastructure improvement that compounds over time.
