MSU Bobcat Stadium Expansion 2026: $5M to Plan More Seats

On Oct 23, 2026

Summary: On September 24, 2026, the Montana Board of Regents gave Montana State University authority to spend up to $5 million to plan and design a Bobcat Stadium expansion. The money comes from donor funds, with athletic facility or football revenue as a backup. No construction budget or timeline exists yet, and MSU calls it a years-long process.

What did the regents approve for the Bobcat Stadium expansion?

The regents approved a design budget, not a construction project. Under Item 226-2011-R0926, MSU can hire architects or a design firm and work out what the next version of Bobcat Stadium looks like.

Donors are expected to fund it, with athletic facility or football program revenue filling in if needed. Nobody has put a price on the construction itself yet. MSU’s filing does say the project should retire some existing unfunded maintenance on the stadium. Once the designs and cost estimates come together, MSU plans to go back to the regents for another round of approvals.

Why is MSU planning a Bobcat Stadium expansion now?

Bobcat Stadium holds roughly 22,000 fans, and MSU’s first three home games this season all sold out, according to KBZK. Tickets for the rest of the season are hard to come by.

MSU’s request to the regents spells out the squeeze. Game-day crowds already fill standing-room-only sections, and the existing parts of the stadium are at maximum capacity with no viable way to add seats. The request also says the stadium’s age limits MSU’s ability to attract other events, such as concerts.

This has been building for a while. In April 2026, MSU Athletics surveyed ticket holders about the stadium’s future, and MSU says it’s using those results to start the design work. At the time, MSU spokesperson Michael Becker said any renovation was years away and would take a major fundraising campaign.

What could a Bobcat Stadium expansion change?

MSU’s board documents name four goals for the design work:

  • Seating capacity, with more seats as the top priority
  • Premium seating, with enhanced options
  • Concessions, with upgraded areas
  • Accessibility, bringing the stadium up to current standards

More seats lead the list. Becker has said that seating more fans and improving the game-day experience is MSU’s top priority. Athletic director Leon Costello said much the same in late 2025, explaining that any expansion would aim to cut standing room and replace it with permanent seats. The seat count, layout, and design firm are all still open questions, and those answers will come with the design work.

Bobcat Stadium has been growing since 1973

Bobcat Stadium opened in 1973 as Reno H. Sales Stadium, built for around half a million dollars, according to MSU Athletics. A $12 million renovation before the 1998 season added a new grandstand with sky suites, and the regents approved new south end zone seating in 2010, now named for Bobcat great Sonny Holland.
Becker called this vote a first step and said MSU is just getting started. The designs are the next thing to watch. If you live near campus or have your eye on a home on Bozeman’s south side, we’ll be following this for anything that touches traffic, parking, or game-day crowds, and we’ll share the designs here once MSU releases them.
