Most recently, it operated as The Wax Museum, a record shop that became a destination for music lovers and serious collectors well beyond Bozeman. The shop closed earlier this year following the passing of owner Kels Koch in February.

Kels Koch opened The Wax Museum in 2022, but his connection to the building goes back much further. He first noticed the space while attending Montana State University in the 1980s. Years later, after working in record stores in cities like Seattle, Austin, and Nashville, he returned to Bozeman and brought the concept to life. The shop focused on used vinyl, CDs, and cassettes, with a strong emphasis on rockabilly, R&B, soul, classic country, and early rock and roll. It didn’t take long to build a following. In 2022, it was recognized as Best Record Shop in Montana. Kels passed away unexpectedly earlier this year following a heart attack.
