Passenger traffic reached a record 2.8 million travelers in 2025, pushing the airport well beyond what was anticipated even a decade ago. With that growth has come more congestion, capacity limitations, and longer wait times, putting strain on both travelers and airport staff.

To keep up, the airport has proposed a $140–$180 million expansion, along with a new runway for commercial service, both aimed at improving flow and supporting continued growth across the region.

What Is Included in the Bozeman Airport Expansion Project?

The proposed improvements focus on both capacity and flow throughout the airport.

According to Yellowstone International Airport, the East Terminal Expansion Project will include:

• Improvements to Concourse A, including larger hold rooms, expanded retail and food options, and an increase in total gates from 12 to 15 
• A larger baggage claim area with three high-capacity carousels 
• A second TSA security checkpoint on the east end of the terminal 
• A new third floor to accommodate administrative offices 

Construction began in 2024 and is expected to continue through 2030. The project is being completed in phases, so travelers can expect ongoing construction and temporary disruptions along the way.

Is Bozeman Airport Getting a New Runway?

In addition to the terminal expansion, the airport is exploring the addition of a new runway to support commercial air traffic.

Before that can move forward, an Environmental Assessment must be completed. This process evaluates potential impacts, including:
