Montana’s new property tax structure takes effect in 2026
Second homes and short-term rentals will carry a higher tax burden
Principal residences and long-term rentals must be enrolled by March 1 to receive the reduced rate
If you claimed a 2025 property tax rebate, you should already be enrolled
Property owners need their Geocode to verify enrollment
Montana has implemented a new Homestead and Long-Term Rental (LTR) tax rate structure that is effective in 2026. This tax structure is shifting more of the burden onto second homes and short-term rentals while easing it for full-time residents and long-term rentals.
Homestead (principal residences) and long-term rental owners need to be enrolled by March 1st to be considered for the reduced tax rate.
If you claimed a property tax rebate in 2025, you should be automatically enrolled. You can verify your enrolment here.
