Bozeman Winter Activities: A Bucket List

On Apr 01, 2023

Spring is in the air in Bozeman, but those of us who have lived here long enough know better than to get too excited. Rather than get bummed out when the inevitable next snowstorm hits, take this as an opportunity to cross off the last few things from your winter bucket list before the summer season begins!

TAKE A SKI DAY

Spring skiing is the BEST, especially after all the snow we've had this winter. Take advantage of Big Sky's April pass which gives you 21 days of skiing in April plus Easter and Pond Skim. Keep in mind Bridger usually closes in the beginning of April, so get some skiing in before it's too late!

GO TO THE MUSEUM

It's hard to want to be inside the museum during the summer months, so go now while the weather is still chilly! The Museum of the Rockies is always a crowd-pleaser. Click here to see schedules and current exhibits.

SLED

The ice skating rinks have closed for the season, but there's still plenty of snow for sledding! It might be a slick or slushy in some places but we're bound to have another snowstorm or two before it's over so when the next one hits, grab the sleds to squeeze in a few more runs! Peet's Hill, Snowfill Recreation Area, and the hill at the 100-Acre Regional Park are all popular spots to check out.

TAKE A HIKE!

The trails aren't muddy yet so now's the time to get in a few more hikes before the busy summer season begins. Some trails might be icy from melting and freezing so bringing yak-tracks or trekking poles is a good idea still. For our favorite winter hikes, click here. If you don't want to adventure all the way to the mountains, there are several in town trails perfect for a sunny day stroll. Click here for a few ideas (be warned-some of these get muddy this time of year!)

GO TO HYALITE

Trust us, go now before the tourists arrive! There are trails to be hiked, frozen waterfalls to be climbed and it's still a magical winter land up there right now. The road is closed April 1st to May 15th to motorized use so unless you plan on walking or biking in (which plenty of people do!) make sure it's not during that time frame. Otherwise, it's a great time to go before it gets crazy up there.

SOAK AT A HOT SPRINGS

This is the best time of year for a hot springs soak. The sun is almost always shining and the temperatures are chilly, but not too cold. Chico Hot Springs is the obvious choice, tucked into the beautiful Paradise Valley. Norris Hot Springs is another great option and you get a beautiful drive along the Madison River. White Sulphur Hot Springs is a little further drive, but nice to get away to for the day. Our favorite is Yellowstone Hot Springs near Gardiner. We haven't had a chance to check it out, but there are several pools and the mountain views are spectacular.
