Summary: What’s Happening in Belgrade Road Construction?

On April 22, 2026, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and the City of Belgrade held a public open house outlining planned roadway improvements across several of Belgrade’s busiest corridors.

While no final construction dates are set, these projects are tentatively targeted for the late 2020s (around 2028–2029) and are still in the planning and design phase.

What Road Projects Are Planned in Belgrade?

According to the MDT, improvements will include upgrading existing traffic signals through the addition of flashing yellow arrows and retroreflective backplates at the following intersections. 

1.  Amsterdam Road & Thorpe
2.  Amsterdam Road with Interstate 90 Eastbound Ramps
3. Jackrabbit Lane with Interstate 90 Westbound Ramps

Currently, they are also evaluating signal and roundabout options for the intersection at Broadway and Main Street. The west side of the Amsterdam and Thrope intersection will also be widened to three lanes. There are also plans to add a railroad underpass along Jackrabbit. According to MDT materials, the proposed improvements are focused on safety, traffic flow, and pedestrian accessibility (ADA compliance).

Why Are These Projects Happening?

Belgrade, like the rest of Montana, has experienced significant population growth in the past decade. With home prices and cost of living continuing to rise in popular ski towns like Bozeman, many turn to neighboring towns that are more affordable but are still in close proximity to Bozeman’s amenities.

With the rapid population growth came traffic pressure, especially along Belgrade’s busiest roads – Jackrabbit, Amsterdam, and Broadway. These projects aim to directly address these pain points to increase the flow of traffic. Many individuals in Belgrade often commute to Bozeman for work or to the airport for travel.

These projects will improve long backups during rush hours, limit delays from the train crossing on Jackrabbit, and support the flow of traffic through the addition of turning lanes/lights.

How Will Construction Impact the Community?

Throughout the completion of these projects, Belgrade will experience some significant changes that will impact the whole community.

Residents and commuters can anticipate lane closures and detours, especially on Jackrabbit, and unpredictable travel times due to construction. This will impact local businesses and owners the most, as access to their physical shops may experience temporary issues for patrons trying to enter.

To summarize: Traffic will get “worse” before it gets significantly better.

Timeline: When Will Construction Start?

There are no confirmed construction start dates at this time. The projects are expected to move forward in phases, tentatively targeting the 2028–2029 timeframe.

Over the next couple of years, the focus will likely remain on planning, design, and gathering public input from the Belgrade community.

Construction could begin as early as 2028, starting with smaller, intersection-focused improvements, with more extensive work along Jackrabbit potentially following in 2029.
