Bozeman’s Cannery District – The Final Stages of Development

On Mar 06, 2019

An effort that began in 2014, to revive an area of Bozeman once most famous for canning peas, is heading into its final stages. Just a few years ago, if someone in Bozeman said “Cannery District” they would get a strange look and a laugh, but now, the Cannery District is one of Bozeman’s most trendy and happening areas.

Over the last 5 years, the area’s dilapidated and abandoned buildings have been transformed and modern designed buildings have been added to create a vibrant business and shopping center on the northeast side of Bozeman. Patagonia has an office here, as do architects, lawyers, a marketing firm, and a real estate office. Lot G Café, Seven Sushi, Pizza Campana, 406 Brewing, and the speakeasy-style bar Devil’s Toboggan all call the Cannery District home along with several health and fitness facilities and boutique-style shops and clothing stores. What's happening in the Cannery District now?

Currently, a mixed-use building named “Building O” is under construction in the Cannery District at the base of the water tower. According to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, upon its completion, it will house Onxmaps, a real estate company, and a restaurant. Photo credit: www.cannerydistrict.com

Plans have been submitted for a residential building called “Cannery Flats” which is expected to include 52 apartments and ground floor commercial space. This building will be the first and only residential building in the Cannery District. According to www.canneryflats.com, the residential units will be studio, one and two bedrooms with a lounge and fitness area as well as a “green space terrace”. The website states that materials such as corrugated metal, wood and concrete will be used in the construction of the building. Photo credit: canneryflats.com.

Also under review, “Building M” will house outdoor gear manufacturer Sitka Gear. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020. Photo credit: Comma Q Architecture.

The final structure to be built in the Cannery District is called “Building J”. This building is expected to be two stories tall with 13,000 square feet of space. After Building J, the Cannery District is essentially out of space. With I-90 directly to the north and the fairgrounds to the South, the area has hit its limit. For the foreseeable future at least.
